Blessed by Lucinda Williams

On this, her tenth studio album, Lucinda introduces us to her bar-room ‘roots and rock’ side. She tells us she is learning how to write songs that deal with anything other than unrequited love and my first impression is that on many of these tracks, she has the ‘up yours!’ genre down pat. There are some great ‘f**k you’ songs for every bad relationship she has ever endured. She does branch out though, and gives us a couple of little gems – like Blessed, a song about her thoughts on the war. While this album was clearly a learning curve for her, she has given us her most accessible album in years. I personally love it ... and listen to it thankful I’m not an ex.
