In May of 2012 the world lost one of the most amazing singers to ever grace the recording studio. Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau made his name in the performance of Lieder and on this 2 CD set from DG you can see why. The dates of the recordings range from 1949-1981, however it doesn't matter what year the recording was made, every consonant is crisp and every phrase beautifully inflected. This is only a best of, so there are few Schubert Lieder, the odd aria from an opera, two from Wagner and some orchestral songs, like the Ruckert Lieder by Mahler. However if you are unfamiliar with this godlike voice, this is an inspiring way to meet Fischer-Dieskau.
