This double CD is a collection of never-before-released and out-of-print songs that span Iron and Wine’s earliest sessions – sessions which spawned The Creek Drank The Cradle in 2002 right through to 2007’s The Shepherd’s Dog.
The first disc incorporates an assortment of raw and unedited home recordings, all very hushed in their delivery. The second is full of studio-quality tunes recorded with the aid of other musicians and engineers. This obviously makes the second disc much more listenable than the first, although Sam Beam’s hushed tones and melancholy songwriting style lend themselves to just voice and guitar or piano.
Of the never-before-released songs come three which were included in the movie In Good Company, one of which, 'The Trapeze Swinger' has been a fan favourite at live shows and also lends a line from the song as the album’s title. Hard-to-find covers of Flaming Lips and New Order songs are also included, as well as 'Sacred Vision', one of Iron and Wine’s earliest originals. As is sometimes the case with these types of albums, don’t be fooled into thinking this is just an album for fans. Take a listen.
