April Underhill, Tooth Fairy

Bob Graham

High in the sky above Parkville, toothfairies April and Esme Underhill are on their way to collect their very first tooth…April and Esme Underhill have never collected a tooth before. Mum and Dad always do it. But tonight it’s their turn. So, equipped with a bag, a coin and a mobile phone, the sisters head for Daniel Dangerfield’s house, and a very unusual first tooth visit! How to Heal a Broken Wing (9781406325492) won the Charlotte Zolotow Award for best picture book text in 2008 and was shortlisted for the Greenaway Medal.

Review

In one sense, this lovely picture book is a classic tooth fairy story; it tells how the fairies come to young Daniel’s bedside to swap his tooth for a coin, and are nearly discovered. But it’s much more than that: it’s a celebration of loving families, of growing up and being trusted to take risks. It’s fairy April and her sister Esme’s first delivery, and their parents are worried they’re not up to it. They have to fly over the M24 with all its rumbling trucks for one thing – and do they really understand that they are ‘spirits of the air’ and must never be seen?

Such adventure, such heart-stopping tension, and such parental pride when the mission is accomplished. A book to share again and again, poring over the pictures. (The fairies' bathroom is my favourite!)
