Paul Grabowsky

Paul Grabowsky’s latest album for ABC Jazz, Solo, represents a landmark in the career of one of Australia’s finest-ever jazz musicians.

Solo is Grabowsky’s first solo album, and features all the hallmarks that have made him one of the world’s foremost jazz instrumentalists and composers. This is jazz for the connoisseur: rich, engaging, full of allusion and wit. But - like The Bitter Suite (recorded with the Paul Grabowsky Sextet and released by ABC Jazz in May 2014) - this is also jazz at its most seductively approachable, music that you’ll want to hear again and again.

The smooth and beguiling Angel, one of Paul’s best-loved compositions, opens the disc; from there we’re taken on a tour of styles and textures, from the rich complexity of Helix to the evocative The Last King of Poland. This album promises to be one of the most significant jazz releases of this generation.

Jazz giant Paul Grabowsky has worked with many jazz luminaries including Chet Baker, Art Farmer and Johnny Griffin, and regularly performs with his own trio, quartet and sextet. He has written the scores for over twenty feature films in Australia, the UK and the US, including The Eye of the Storm and Last Orders (Fred Schepisi), Innocence (Paul Cox), and Shiner (John Irvin).

He is the founder and Artistic Director of the Australian Art Orchestra, with which he tours both nationally and internationally. He has won four ARIA Awards, two Helpmann Awards, several Bell Awards and a Deadly Award. He was the Sydney Myer Performing Artist of the Year in 2000, and received the Melbourne Prize for Music in 2007.
