Night Vision

Ella West

Winner of the The LIANZA Young Adult Fiction Award 2015

Viola was born with a genetic condition that makes sunlight deadly. In the dark of night, when most teenagers are tucked up in bed, Viola has the run of her parents’ farm and the surrounding forest. She is used to seeing hidden things through her night-vision goggles, but one night she sees something that could get her into a whole lot of trouble…

Viola has always believed she would be dead before she was twenty, but now she must decide just how far she’s willing to go to help her parents keep their beloved farm. Is it okay to steal from a thief? What if the thief might be a killer? And what if the killer threatens to come after her and her family?

Review

This thriller is based around a girl’s unusual condition and how that changes her life. Viola’s body cannot process UV rays, so any exposure to sunlight or UV lights has the potential to kill her. Consequently, she lives in the world of the night, often wandering alone through the nearby forest. When she witnesses a terrible crime, she decides to keep it a secret, but this act has terrifying consequences for her.

The characters in this novel are full of secrets, with few words spoken, which make it occasionally a little heavy on exposition in order to reveal important back story. However, when Viola is in the woods the story moves along at a fast pace and keeps the reader engaged.

Readers 12 and up who like realist fiction and thrillers will enjoy this novel.
