Messenger: The Legend of Joan of Arc

Tony Lee

This is a gripping and powerful story of Joan of Arc’s short but inspirational life fighting for freedom during the One Hundred Years War between France and England.

Shaping a story from the original transcripts of Joan of Arc’s trial before her death at the stake, Tony Lee portrays the extraordinary life of a young farm girl who becomes the leader of an army of men. Her story tells of a young woman who has an unflinching faith in God and in herself. It is also a story of someone prepared to risk everything in the battle for freedom and independence.

This is a superb book for introducing readers to the iconic and historic figure Joan of Arc. It is an accessible, entertaining and inspiring interpretation of Joan of Arc’s story, which is sure to appeal to children learning about the Middle Ages. It is written by New York Times number one bestselling graphic novelist, Tony Lee and beautifully and dramatically brought to life in full colour by illustrator Sam Hart.

Review

This is a fascinating introduction to the iconic figure of Joan of Arc in a graphic format. From her youth as a normal child who loved to dance around the fairy tree, the story shows her first vision from God at the age of 13 and how this changed her life and the future of France. Joan’s strength of belief in herself and her visions, her determination and her prowess as a warrior leading an army are all depicted elegantly and effectively. Joan really comes to life as a complex person, rather than a tedious figure in history.

This is an excellent addition to the graphic series by Tony Lee and Sam Hart, which brings to life warriors and rebels, including Robin Hood and King Arthur. All of them are suitable for readers aged 10 to adult.
