Sigur Ros
Kveikur (pronounced: Quake-ah) is the seventh studio album from Sigur Ros and the first to be released via XL worldwide. It follows the beautiful Valtari, which was released a mere year ago and debuted on the ARIA charts at #14.
Self-produced by the band’s three members - Jon Tor Birgisson, Georg Holm and Orri Pall Dyrason - Kveikur sees the band shifting towards a more direct, aggressive sound and defined by a darker, more dystopian mood than previous albums.
Kveikur is the sound of a band bonding in the strongest possible way and, in doing so, finding themselves still further out on their own.
“Gives an injection of adrenaline straight to the heart as it swoops into its ethereal, transcendent motion” - Drum Media

Review
Dave Clarke
When Sigur Rós announced their new album earlier this year, they promised a more ‘aggressive’ sound. Kveikur certainly starts out that way: a heavy bass line dominates the first track, ‘Brennisteinn’. Things settle down somewhat from there, with Jónsi’s mesmerising imaginary lyrics floating beautifully over the band’s trademark atmospherics.
Yet Kveikur undoubtedly has a much poppier sound, especially compared to their first two, incredibly fragile, albums, Ágætis Byrjun and (). I don’t say that as a criticism, for Sigur Rós would surely have become irrelevant had they repeated themselves over and over. Rather, I imagine Kveikur will be played out of many headphones in the months ahead, with listeners walking around in a sonic daze from the sensory assault found within.
