Beethoven Piano Sonatas Volume 3

\n

This recording, the third in the series of Beethoven piano\nsonatas, comprises four works from three different periods of the\ncomposer’s life. As with the two previous recordings, there was no\nparticular plan governing their being put together, other than the\ninclusion of one very famous sonata (in this case the ‘Moonlight’)\nwith others that are less often heard. The Op. 26 Sonata contains a\nfuneral march; the Op. 10 No. 2 is a concise masterpiece of humour\nin music; the two movements of Op. 90 are said to be depictions of\nspeech and song, with the second of the two sounding a lot like\nSchubert.

Review

Angela Hewitt, having established herself as one of the great pianists in the world of classical music and after tackling one of the pillars of classical music in Bach, logic concludes that she should tackle another in Beethoven.

This is the third volume of Beethoven’s piano Sonatas and Hewitt displays the same qualities in this recording that made the first two volumes such a listening pleasure. The sonatas on this recording come from three different periods of Beethoven’s life. One famous sonata, in this case The Moonlight, and three lesser known works and each are played with Hewitt’s trademark patience, intelligence and grace. An exquisite recording.
