Joined by one of the most formidable combinations in the opera world today ? the chorus and orchestra of the Deutsche Oper, Berlin, under director Donald Runnicles ? this recording is also a sonic spectacular, made in Decca?s time-honoured tradition.

There will be a lot of Wagner releases in 2013 to celebrate the birth of this world changing composer. The first of these significant recordings that I’ve seen is Kaufmann’s nod to his most recent roles at part of the Metropolitan Opera’s Ring Cycle. His is the type of voice you’d imagine as rich chocolate cake, right from the opening there is something truly satisfying about both his voice in this situation and his musical interpretations. He starts with a selection of arias from different operas, the last tracks are the Wesendonck-Lieder, which are not often performed by a tenor. This is one of those albums that terrific to listen to when you need a bit of a pick me up.
