Review

Amy Dickson has done a lot for classical saxophone in Australia, getting some really amazing recordings out there of works not often heard. This new recording is no different in that it’s got exciting and contemporary works with the flavour of cinematic music throughout. It starts with the John Williams (of Star Wars fame) Escapades for alto saxophone and orchestra, which gives the album it’s name, as it was the featured work in the Hollywood movie, Catch Me If You Can. There’s a fantastic Concerto by Michael Kamen in the middle and then the crowning glory (for a person who grew up listening to the Local Hero soundtrack thanks to her parents) is a Saxophone Concerto based solely on the soundtrack. It’s a stunning work, with so many beautiful melodies instantly recognisable. The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra is glorious, with local conductor Benjamin Northey at the helm. This is a must have recording for 2013.
