Shostakovich Symphonies No 1-3

Wigglesworth Mark Netherlands Radio Orchestra

Mark Wigglesworth continues his Shostakovich cycle on BIS,\nperforming with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and\nChoir Symphonies Nos. 1 to 3

\n

The First Symphony was in fact the graduation piece that\ncompleted his studies at the Leningrad Conservatory, but to quote\nMark Wigglesworth, ‘Shostakovich’s trade-mark musical gestures are\nall immediately obvious’ and was an immediate success.

\n

The Second and Third symphonies are still rarely performed in\nconcert. At least nominally, there is a political theme to both\nworks - the Second was a commission from the State Publishing House\nto honour the tenth anniversary of the October Revolution and The\nThird, with its subtitle ‘The First of May’, was a celebration of\nthe international Worker’s Day.

Who doesn’t love a goodShostakovich Symphony? There are not manyorchestral musicians whodon’t adore the exciting andvirtuosic fifteen symphoniesthat he wrote. Mark Wigglesworth is one ofthose rare conductors who not only enjoys therespect of his fellow musicians but is also awell renowned commentator. This renditionof the first three symphonies of Shostakovichstill feels optimistic, with a giant dash ofcheekiness prevalent throughout.

Who doesn’t love a good Shostakovich Symphony? There are not many orchestral musicians who don’t adore the exciting and virtuosic fifteen symphonies that he wrote. Mark Wigglesworth is one of those rare conductors who not only enjoys the respect of his fellow musicians but is also well renowned commentator on music. This is a rendition of the first three symphonies of Shostakovich, and they feel still optimistic and there’s a giant dash of cheekiness prevalent throughout the three works. Everything feels like it’s just beginning in his compositional life and it’s exciting to listen to history in the making.
