Nouveau Monde Baroque Arias And Songs

Petibon Patricia La Cetra Marcon Andrea

Admired for her remarkable creative imagination and exemplary\nmusicianship, soprano Patricia Petibon, in her newest album for\nDeutsche Grammophon, offers a treasure-trove of fascinating Baroque\ncuriosities guaranteed to enthral both the Baroque aficionado and\nthe casual listener.

\n

Nouveau Monde is conceived as a journey from the Old to the New\nWorld, a spell-binding collection of arias, songs and pieces from\nEuropean composers (Charpentier, Händel, Rameau, Purcell) that\ntestify to their composers’ fascination with the exoticism of\nrecently-discovered lands, as well as South American folksongs\nwhich boast exceptional rhythmic energy and colour

\n

Spectacularly accompanied by the La Cetra Baroque Orchestra\nunder the excelling direction of Andrea Marcon – who also stands\nout as a Baroque organist and harpsichordist - Patricia enchants\nour senses with a mélange of 17th-century arias and folk songs from\nEngland, France, Spain, and Latin America

\n

As a follow-up to her best-selling Rosso and Melancolía albums,\nPatricia Petibon’s 2012 release is guaranteed to be one of the most\npopular and sought-after Baroque releases of the year

Review

Patricia Petibon is quite the versatile performer. The last time I was reviewing her was in a production of Berg’s Lulu. This could not be further from that. This collection of Baroque arias explores the idea of ‘New Worlds’ as presented by composers of the time. Yes there are favourites here, Dido’s Lament, Fairest Isle and Greensleeves, but I tell you it’s the lesser known works which are really going to get to you. The evocative opening of Yo Soy La Locura is going to send shivers down you spine, while folk elements of the traditional tunes are going to have your toes tapping before you know what’s happened. Even if you’re not much a fan of vocal music this recording is sure to delight.
