James Ensor (1860-1949) can without a doubt be regarded as one of the protagonists of modern art. His impact has been profound and traces of it can still be found in the work of national and international artists. This relation is the theme of this exhibition Hareng Saur: Ensor and Contemporary Art. Each of the carefully chosen works by contemporary artists has something Ensorian about it. They enter into dialogue with his oeuvre, refer to it, or are directly inspired by it. Among the contemporary artists included are Carlos Amorales, Guillaume Bijl, Raymond Pettibon, Wim Delvoye, Elly Strik, Chris Ofili, Jake & Dinos Chapman, Patrick van Caeckenbergh, Cameron Jamie, Thomas Schtte, Francis Als, Jeremy Deller, Paul McCarthy and many others.
