Douglas Jerry

The phrase “living legend” may be overused, but in the case of the master Dobro guitarist Jerry Douglas, it’s also an understatement. In addition to his first-call status as a Nashville recording icon, he’s adored by rock musicians like Paul Simon, Elvis Costello, James Taylor and John Fogerty, all of whom have featured him on tours. Jerry is a 13-time Grammy winner and the long-time featured soloist with the multi-platinum Alison Krauss & Union Station. Jerry is also Musical Director and Co-Host of ‘The Journey’ a national PBS TV series about the history of American Folk Music set to air in late 2012/ early 2013. With Traveler, Jerry has finally recorded an album that will even further elevate his already impressive stature from super-sideman to a bona fide front-rank creator of musical Americana. Produced by Russ Titelman (Eric Clapton, Paul Simon, James Taylor, Ry Cooder, Little Feat, etc.), and recorded in New Orleans, Nashville, and London, this ambitious collection of vocals and instrumentals enlists a truly awesome cast of characters in support of an epic vision that combines Country/Bluegrass, R&B, and even a ballad with roots in the British Isles (Paul Simon’s ‘The Boxer’, performed with Mumford & Sons and the song’s composer). This track is the first new Mumford & Sons recording in 2 years. Other highlights include two New Orleans classics - ‘Something You Got’, with vocals and guitar by Eric Clapton; and ‘High Blood Pressure’, with vocals by Keb’ Mo and a gang of the Crescent City’s finest, including Dr. John. But it’s really a full album of high points, and the reaction among general music fans is likely to be what many insiders have known for years. There is simply no one on Earth who plays music like Jerry Douglas.

Review

Jerry Douglas’s Dobroskills have made him thetop player in Nashville. His distinctive tone hasgraced some 1800 sessionsand been featured on thewonderful BBC series Transatlantic Sessions, fusing Celtic and country. Douglas is also agigging musician with his own band andhas been a part of Alison Krauss and UnionStation since 1998.

Traveler is very muchan exploration of American roots music, and this time Douglas explores the musicalgrounds of New Orleans, helped out byartists like Dr John, Keb Mo, Paul Simon,Mumford & Sons, Alison Krauss andsometimes Dobro player Eric Clapton. There are highlights aplenty here – includingthe truly rocking lap steel instrumental ‘SoHere We Are’, a gritty version of Simon’s‘The Boxer’ and the funky ‘High BloodPressure’ with Dr John and Keb Mo, as wellas the beautiful Dobro medley ‘AmericanTune/Spain’.
