Ogilvy Alistair

Alistair is a fine traditional singer. He was a finalist in the BBC Radio Scotland ‘Young Traditional Musician Of The Year’ Award in both 2011 and 2012, and won the Traditional Music And Song Association’s ‘Young Singer Of Merit’ award the same year. Alistair has already appeared at many folk clubs and festivals in the UK and his songs have been aired on several Radio Scotland programmes.

Born in Strathblane, surrounded by beautiful countryside and the Campsie Hills, Alistair now lives in Glasgow. His family encouraged a young boy’s love of music but especially his grandparents who nurtured an interest in traditional song. The result is Alistair has been singing ever since he can remember and traditional song has become a way of life for him.

He loves everything about singing: telling stories, expressing himself and being able to reflect on history and make it relevant to the present day, while relishing the opportunity to touch and connect with an audience. Alistair is also anxious to present Scots singing to a younger generation and banish the typical stereotype of Scots song - less about tartan and heather and more about ballads.

Alistair’s debut album was produced, engineered and mixed by Mattie Foulds at Mobile With A Home Studios and mastered by Stuart Hamilton at Castlesound Studios. The session musicians are friends Aly Macrae (various instruments including piano, fiddle and mandolin), Steven Polwart (guitars) and Inge Thomson (backing vocals).

Review

Ogilvy is an impressive new Scottish singer with some talented accompanist friends. Ogilvy delivers a very moving version of Dylan’s ‘Girl From the North Country’ that is as good as it gets.

The songs are mostly traditional with a few Burns tunes and the odd well chosen contemporary song. Album closer ‘The Kirkwall Light’ is an original describing an afternoon on the isle of Orkney watching a flock of geese flying overhead in the fading Winter light segues back and forth between rhythmic guitar, blazing fiddle and Ogilvy’s beautiful singing and is destined to become a celtic classic.
