In the eighteenth century, 1,300 years after the last Olympic Games in ancient times, the Olympic theme was highly fashionable. Many composers based operas of the libretto L'Olimpiade by Metastasio. This recording has been structured to contain all of Metastasio’s original arias; it is a pasticcio in the sense that the music is by 16 different composers amongst the many that set the libretto between 1733 and the end of the century.

This new release includes 16 arias in world-premiere recording.

Released to coincide with the London Olympics 2012. Unique operatic project featuring all 16 of Pietro Metastasio’s arias for his most popular opera set to music by leading Baroque and Classical composers Leo, Hasse, Galuppi, Sarti, Myslivecek, Paisiello, Perez, Vivaldi, Gassmann, Caldara, Traetta, Jommelli, Cherubini, Pergolesi and Piccini. A thrilling operatic spectacular of extraordinary historical and musical significance.

Review

The Olympic fever is taking over again, however this time it’s even bled into the world of classical music. As much as some people would shudder at this thought, don’t! It has meant that we have this amazing recording. Between the early 1700s right through until the mid 1800s dozens of composers took the same libretto by Pietro Metastasio set in the world of the Olympiad and composed an opera based upon it. Cut to the 21st Century and we have a collection of die hard musicologists come together to perform one of these. Realising that so many of the operas have been left neglected with painstaking deliberation they created this ‘Pasticcio’. Tying together the original libretto, each aria is from a different opera by a different composer. There is some amazing music here from both known and forgotten composers. If you love opera, or even have a vague passing fancy to opera, this is a must for your collection.
