ARIA Award-winning, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer and all-round one-man band Gotye is the music-making mantle of Wally De Backer. A few years ago he created an album that became something of an underground classic. That record, Like Drawing Blood, was voted Triple J listeners’ favourite album of 2006, and iTunes UK’s Album Of The Year in 2008. In 2007, Gotye won the ARIA Award as Australia’s Best Male Artist and his audiovisual ambitious tour with a mini orchestra attracted huge crowds and critical raves. Five years on, Like Drawing Blood polled #11 Triple Js Hottest 100 Australian Albums Of All Time earlier this month, and is currently Top 10 on the iTunes Album Chart and #1 on the iTunes Alternative Chart. Fast forward to 2011, Gotye’s second cut from his highly anticipated forthcoming release Making Mirrors is ‘Somebody That I Used To Know (feat. Kimbra)’. Equally an exercise in emotional punch and classy restraint, the song features the vocals of rising star Kimbra, and recounts with heartbreaking clarity the fall-out of a fading relationship. The mid-July single release came a few days earlier than planned owing to an online leak of the video. triple j was the first station to give it the worldwide on-air premiere, calling it “a really exciting harbinger for the album”. Within two weeks the video has been embraced globally with over 400,000 combined views across YouTube & Vimeo. Its been shared 70,000 times on Facebook alongside Twitter pioneers, Ashton Kutcher and Lily Allen confessing their love for the song & video to 10 million followers combined. In an extraordinary way, three weeks since the single was released with only early Triple J airplay support and a massive online buzz, the song has blasted from #27 to #12 on Australias ARIA Singles Chart and Top 5 on iTunes (the highest Australian Artist). A forecast for the single to be inside the Top 10 with Gold status accreditation is expected next week.Earlier this year, the first single Eyes Wide Open lifted from Gotyes album Making Mirrors came in at #25 in Triple J’s Hottest 100 only weeks after its release. Since then Gotye has delivered memorable live performances on the Laneway and Groovin’ The Moo festivals.
