Build A Rocket Boys

Elbow

They have been described as ‘One of Britain’s best bands’ (The Times), as ‘Heart-crushingly beautiful’ (Sunday Times), ‘at the top of their game’ Uncut, and ‘quite simply one of the greatest, most consistent songwriters this fair isle’s ever produced’ NME And ‘a band whose consistency has seldom been matched by any British indie band this decade’ NME and this from WORD MAG, “Comparisons to Radiohead and Coldplay made sense but flattered both bands”.

They simply are one of the greatest and most critically & universally acclaimed bands to come out of the UK in the last 10 years, full stop. Their fourth LP The Seldom Seen Kid entered the UK charts at No.5 and was met with universal praise and now the Mercury Prize winners Elbow are back with a brand new album - ‘Build A Rocket Boys’.

This is the group’s 5th release and the follow up to the million selling ‘The Seldom Seen Kid’. The new album finds them self-producing for the second time, with keyboard player Craig Potter taking both producing and mixing duties at Blueprint Studios in Salford. Fortunately nothing gets missed in the process. Their sound, from moody piano-driven ballads, up to full band rockers, retains the immediacy and weight of British rock, but always with either a slightly cheeky or sinister edge. And the rich, unique vocals of Guy Garvey see to it that no one can accuse them of having anything but their own distinct sound.

Review

Build a Rocket Boys is the much anticipated follow-up to 2008’s Mercury prizewinning Seldom Seen Kid, from Manchester’s hardest working band. Having toiled away for the best part of 20 years in relative obscurity, it is fantastic to see this superb band hit their stride in recent years – and the fine run of form continues on this album, which is sure to delight long-time fans and newcomers alike. First single Neat Little Rows once again pushes their sound forward, with the yearning, unmistakable voice of Guy Garvey providing the wings on which the track soars. Elsewhere, tracks like the wonderfully titled Lippy Kids provide more reasons why Elbow is a band who has earned its well-deserved place in the sun.
