ABC Classic FM CD of the Week: 6th of August 2012
Tchaikovsky’s charming series of piano miniatures The Seasons features one piece for each month of the year. In a world premiere performance, award-winning musicians, composers and innovators Grigoryan Brothers will play the entire suite of these works arranged for two guitars by their father Edward.
by Phil Richards
It seemed like the Grigoryan Brothers hadn’t recorded classical music for quite a while, so when this recording came across my desk I was pleased and curious to see how these pieces, written for piano, would work in a guitar duo setting. I needn’t have worried. From the opening notes you are drawn into the music and in no time at all you’ve forgotten that these are arrangements of piano pieces. They have been skilfully arranged by Edward Grigoryan, the father of Slava and Leonard, whose is a very fine musician in his own right. The playing of the brothers is of course of the highest quality, and you would expect nothing less from these talented musicians. If you’ve never heard these works before then this is a great place to start.
