Faure Cello Sonatas

Gerhardt Alban Licad Cecile

Catalogue # CDA67872

Following their triumphant Casals Encores album (CDA67831), Alban Gerhardt and Cecile Licad present these masterpieces of French cello repertoire. Alongside Faure’s masterful cello sonatas are some of his most seductive bon-bons, including the famous Sicilienne and Elegy. Alban Gerhardt toured Australia late last year and has been praised as ‘one of the most gifted cellists on the international scene’ (Daily Telegraph UK).

Faure Cello Sonatas
Elegie, Romance, Papillon, Serenade, Scicilenne, Allegro commodo
Alban Gerhardt (cello), Cecile Licad (piano)

When I first put this CD into the player and the first few bars jumped out of the speakers, I thought I’d inserted the wrong CD. Instead of the lyrical Faure I was expecting, as seen in his Elegie Op 24 and Romance Op 69, I got a twentieth century exciting and interesting Cello Sonata No. 1. What a joy it is too! With a romantic sound still present, it’s got rhythm intensity with use of dissonances particular to Faure. Although still featuring our favourite cello works (including the above), I will be listening to these two exciting and interesting sonatas repeatedly for a while.
