Despite my prejudices (or maybe just to spite them) Angela Hewitt has produced an interpretation of the English Suites on piano which matches any for harpsichord. Her playing is crisp and lively, yet at times filled with pathos. Hewitt’s is a rare talent that takes the listener on an emotional and exciting journey, yet maintains complete control over the material. The Prelude to No 4 (F Major) was my favourite. I don’t generally agree with Bach played on piano…but with Angela Hewitt I’ll always make an exception. Well worth the price of admission.
