\n

French jazz accordionist Richard Galliano’s records his first\nclassical album ever.

\n

His first album on Deutsche Grammophon is devoted to a composer\nwith whom he has always felt close: “I began and continued my\nstudies with Bach. I played a good many of the Preludes and Fugues\nfrom the Well-tempered Clavier, the Italian Concerto and many other\nworks… But as far as recording is concerned, I didn’t ‘start’\nwith Bach, it’s true. For me, this disc represents the culmination\nof 45 years of ‘all-terrain’ musical experience.”

\n

For this album Richard Galliano has chosen works originally\nwritten for cello, oboe, violin, keyboard and for flute, arranged\nthem for accordion with the accompaniment of five collaborators:\nviolinists Jean-Marc Phillips and Sébastien Surel, the viola player\nJean-Marc Apap, cellist Raphaël Pidoux and the double-bassist\nStéphane Logerot.

\n

Richard Galliano is an exceptionally versatile musician, whose\nmany artistic collaborations and encounters include playing with\nEnrico Rava, Charlie Haden, Michel Portal, Jan Garbarek, Martial\nSolal, Anouar Brahem and Paolo Fresu, to name just a few.

Review

Who would have thought that there could ever be a new way of playing Bach? Richard Galliano has found it! Performing a whole mixture of Bach’s repertoire – from the solo flute partita to the double concerto for oboe and violin – he has rearranged them to fit on his instrument of choice, the piano accordion. With lovely balance in the chamber sections and an impressive display of technical mastery, this is a fascinating recording for those who are looking for something a little different.
