Recorded live at the Philharmonie Berlin, this recording\ncaptures a truly gripping performance of Bruckner’s 7th Symphony,\nbringing an insightful, theatrical interpretation of epic grandeur\nto one of the greatest late-Romantic symphonies.

\n

This performance illuminates a landmark event - Daniel\nBarenboim’s week-long Bruckner cycle with his Berliner\nStaatskapelle in June 2010. The concert featured on this recording\ndrew 13 minutes of uninterrupted applause from the exhilarated\naudience.

\n

The press said of this magical concert: “[Barenboim’s] Bruckner\nis conceived and performed very theatrically, like an opera without\nwords” (Der Tagesspiegel). In the mighty orchestral build-ups, the\neffect is hair-raising, “like watching a Gothic cathedral arise in\ntime lapse” (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung).

Review

Anton Bruckner’s life and works are so opposite in their style, you wouldn’t believe they were in any way related. The grandiose symphonies, especially the Symphony No 7, nicknamed ‘Lyric’ cannot be further from his simple taste and total humility in the face of overwhelming popularity. We’re lucky to have Daniel Barenboim with the Staatskapelle Berlin tackle this work and with the vigour of a live recording, this is a great one to add to the collection.
