Au Revoir, Crazy European Chick

Joe Schreiber

It’s prom night - and Perry just wants to stick to his own plan and finally play a much-anticipated gig with his band in the Big Apple. But when his mother makes him take Gobija Zaksauskas - their quiet, geeky Lithuanian exchange student - to the prom, he never expects that his ordinary high school guy life will soon turn on its head. Perry finds that Gobi is on a mission, and Perry has no other choice but to go along for a reckless ride through Manhattan’s concrete grid with a trained assassin in Dad’s red Jag. Infused with capers, car chases, heists, hits, henchmen, and even a bear fight, this story mixes romance, comedy, and tragedy in a true teen coming-of-age adventure - and it’s not over until it’s ‘au revoir’.

Review

Perry Stormaire is struggling with his college applications. His original plan to study Law at Colombia University has stalled and he has been forced to consider other options.

Perry is a typical high-school boy – he crushes on girls he can never get, plays in band and works part-time at his father’s law firm. Things appear to be running smoothly for him until his parents decide to take in a Lithuanian exchange student, Gobi Zaksauskus.

Perry reluctantly agrees to take Gobi to the prom. His band Inchworm is performing on the same night but Perry has hatched a plan that involves ditching his prom date early and making it to the live gig. The night doesn’t go as planned as Perry finds himself agreeing to take Gobi to New York in his father’s treasured Jaguar. Gobi is not a shy student but rather an attractive trained assassin who is looking to knock off five targets. The two go on a wild ride through the streets of New York that involves car chases and hit men and a dash of romance. On this thrilling night Perry learns a lot about himself, and also gathers enough material for his college applications.

This is a thrilling story that moves at a fast pace. The characters are likeable and while some parts are a little clichéd, there is enough humour and action to make it an enjoyable read.
