Hendrik Petrus Berlage (1856-1934) was a prominent Dutch architect. Considered to be the ‘father of modern architecture’ in The Netherlands. His legacy includes the Amsterdam Commodities Exchange, the Berlage Bridge (Amsterdam), Holland House (London), Gemeentemuseum Den Haag and ‘Plan Berlage’, his vision for the extension of Amsterdam. He was highly influential, inspiring such cultural and architectural groups as the Traditionalists, the Amsterdam School, De Stijl and the New Objectivists.
