Michael Kirby: Paradoxes, Principles
Michael Kirby Paradoxes and Principles is the first biography of The Honourable Michael Kirby AC CMG; written by one of Australia’s leading public law and political science scholars, AJ Brown.
When he retired from the High Court, The Hon Michael Kirby was Australia’s longest serving judge. Kirby was a leader in law reform and human rights with the OECD, UNESCO, UNHRC and WHO. His legal and humanitarian contribution as a judge, both here and overseas, is unparalleled.
Michael Kirby spans Kirby’s life from his humble beginnings in Concord to his work as the first Australian to serve as a Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Human Rights. It looks not just at the judge but at Michael the person.
The book provides:
- New information about the notorious 2002 incident with federal Senator Bill Heffernan; including results of the only independent investigation ever conducted into how falsified records came to be used by Heffernan;
- Exclusive access to over 117 metres of personal and official correspondence, dating back to the 1940s;
- The first-ever access by any legal researcher to the internal working materials of a serving High Court judge over the three year period 2005-2008 and;
- The most comprehensive examination provided in any Australian biography to date, of how senior judges do their job on behalf of citizens, deciding legal cases and shaping the law in a rapidly changing world.
Professor AJ Brown has worked as a senior investigator for the Commonwealth Ombudsman, as associate to the President of the Queensland Court of Appeal, as a ministerial policy advisor in the Queensland Government and is currently the John F Kearney Professor of Public Law at Griffith University.
