New Zealand, early 1900s. Two immigrant brothers from China, Yung and Shun, eke out a living as greengrocers. Katherine McKechnie, struggling to raise her children following the death of her husband, visits Yung's shop and is touched by his generosity. Over time a relationship develops between them that Katherine's son Robbie cannot abide.
