Her lifelong goal had been to paint a complete collection of Australasian wildflowers, and this pursuit frequently led her into some of the most wild and inhospitable areas of Australia. Then, during World War 1, at the age of 70, she travelled to New Guinea to paint all 72 known species of the Bird of Paradise. At the time she was hailed as the first white woman to journey alone in the tropical jungles of New Guinea.
