In 2004, Maria Tumarkin embarked on an international odyssey to investigate and write about sites of violence and suffering. Traumascapes is a powerful meditation on the places she visited: Bali, Berlin, Moscow, New York, Port Arthur, Sarajevo and Shanksville, Pennsylvania, the crash site of the fourth plane involved in the attacks of September 11 2001.
In late 2004, the impact of the south-east Asian tsunami was on our TV screens in footage of devastated land and displaced peoples. Places that were once working hubs of local communities and the playgrounds of international tourists are now physically and emotionally scarred.
In a time when terror and tragedy flourish, sites of trauma become powerful landmarks, drawing pilgrims and tourists from around the world. Far from being mere backdrops to devastation and despair, these places hold the key to our ability to find meaning in modern-day tragedies. In traumascapes, life goes on but the past is unfinished business.
