In 1949 Alfred Day returns to the war he fought in as a young gunner. He returns as an extra in a movie about a German POW camp; to relive his own experiences as a prisoner of war but his perspicacity is dimming. Alfred is displaced without the war, the first thing he ever belonged to, he has lost his crew and the woman he loved. Day is an extraordinary portrait of a man among men whose limited and incoherent world has almost disintegrated.
