Red Dog Soundtrack

"From start to finish, there was always music playing in the background during production of RED DOG. The movie took almost seven years to make, but during that time music kept us going. In the early stages, I played tracks we hoped to use in the film at investor meetings as a way of conveying our vision for RED DOG. And while not all of those potential investors came along for the ride, a lot of the songs did and here they are in the final soundtrack years later. As children of the seventies, the era in which RED DOG takes place, Kriv Stenders and I were keen to include some of the music we grew up to. But with no big money in the budget to secure the rights to the songs we loved and knew would be so right for the film (could JOHN arrive in town to anything other than EAGLE ROCK?), fellow Music Supervisor Kim Green and I had to bargain, cajole and sometimes beg with agents and artists, appealing to their dog-loving side. As a sweetener we showed them early cuts of the scenes their songs would hopefully accompany. Whilst this strategy didn't exactly endear us to cat lovers, I'm happy to say we gathered some fantastic tracks thanks to the generosity of those artists, songwriters, and management who wanted to back an underdog, for which we'll always be grateful. RED DOG is a heartfelt film and it's in the moments of strong emotion happiness, love, or grief that Cezary Skubiszewski's original score really soars. THE MAESTRO, as we liked to call him, did a superb job capturing the spirit of RED DOG through his music, coaxing a fantastic performance from members of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in the three-hour window we squeezed them into before another performance! Like all great film music, listened to outside of the movie THE MAESTRO's original score is extremely evocative of the RED DOG spirit, but at the same time a beautiful, stand-alone musical marvel. It's because music appeals so powerfully to our emotions that it is so crucial to movie making - I know I will be listening to this CD fondly for many years! We had great fun working on RED DOG and compiling this soundtrack. We peppered in some great one-liners and snippets of dialogue from our wonderful cast too. Like RED DOG himself, music unites people, so we hope you enjoy reliving your favourite moments from the film, whether that's the romance, the mateship, the longing, the communities, the dog, or simply PEETO knitting in his underpants" Nelson Woss - Producer/Music Supervisor & the all at the RED DOG Team
