After a prolonged absence, one of the most awarded singers in the Australian music community returns with Away, a collaborative project featuring a cast of the most talented improvising musicians in the country. Christine's originals and several inspired covers are used as the basis for free-ranging, atmospheric jams that have the aural density of a sound-collage, combined with the pulse that only a superb band playing in real time can create. The band is are the cream of Australia's improvisers: percussionist David Jones, bassist Evri Evripidou, sax/flautist Tony Buchanan, and the producer/guitarist Craig Ross, known for his work with Patti Griffin. Also appearing are Jeremy Alsop, David Hirschfelder, Stephen Magnusson, Luke Howard, Andy Milne and Mary Doumany. The covers are emotionally devastating renditions of Joni Mitchell's River and Bruce Hornsby's Shadowlands. Christine has performing with luminaries including Ronnie Scott, Chico Freeman, Chucho Valdes, Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen and virtually every Australian jazz musician of stature. She released a series of acclaimed solo albums through Larrikin and Festival as well as recording collaborations with Renee Geyer, Joe Chindamo, Ted Vining and more. Christine has received multiple nominations for the Bell Awards, Australia's preeminent jazz award, including this year's lifetime achievement, and in 1998 was a finalist in the prestigious Thelonious Monk Institute's Jazz International Vocals Competition. Christine's reputation is that of a superb jazz singer, but Away is much more than jazz: an allenveloping listening experience that will appeal to any admirer of sophisticated, emotionally engaging music, be it Cassandra Wilson or Peter Gabriel, Sigur Ros or David Sylvian.
