Long before the days when Steve Martin started making cosy family values pictures, he was busily being the Jim Carrey of his era by churning out anarchic classics like this. The white-haired joker stars as the medical genius with the unpronounceable name and the groundbreaking methods of brain surgery, who saves the life of hit-and-run victim Kathleen Turner, marries her, realises too late her psychotic gold-digging tendencies, and seeks solace in a relationship with a disembodied brain (voiced sweetly by Sissy Spacek). This third collaboration between Martin and Carl Reiner takes stupidity to new boundaries, flinging daft situations and sight gags on the viewer with giddy aplomb, but somehow, thanks to Martin's knack for visual hilarity, it manages to pull it off without ever appearing laboured or pathetic. A milestone in dumb comedy.
