Chevy Chase, whose obnoxious comedy style has never been as well used in the movies as it was on television, holds up his end in this surprisingly sprightly comic nightmare, scripted by John Hughes, in which he tries to take his family on a holiday to a Disneyland-style theme park, but keeps getting sidetracked on the road. With very funny cameos from Randy Quaid, as a hick cousin, Imogene Coca, as a disgusting old relative, and, most pricelessly, James Keach as a highway patrolman theorising on how Coca's appalling dog got killed. It ends up enjoyably with Chase punching a cartoon moose.
