After the sudden death of his wife (Hope Davis), university professor Joe (Colin Firth) is offered a position in Italy by an old colleague, Barbara (Catherine Keener). The sun-soaked city of Genova - birthplace of Christopher Columbus - provides a fresh start for Joe and his daughters, teenager Kelly (Willa Holland) and her younger sister Mary (Perla Haney-Jardine). As Barbara introduces the family to the city with its shadow-cloaked medieval alleyways and the captivating beauty of the Cinque Terre coastline, they each adapt to their new life in different ways.
