Superintendent Corrado Cattani is dead. After his lover, the beautiful judge Silvia Conti, recovers somewhat from the shock of his death, she decides to take vengeance and carry on his long standing battle against the Mafia. She vows to put the unscrupulous businessman Espinosa, upon whom she lays the blame for the killing of Cattani, behind bars. This is the first episode without Michele Placido (Cattani) as the charismatic investigator, but while he will be sadly missed, Vittorio Mezzogiornio is our new hero as Commissario Davide Licata, an Italian ex-cop living in New York, returning to Sicily to find the man responsible for the slaugter of his unit. Mezzogiorno is an excellent replacement for Placido...not a broken man but a no-nonsense cop.
