The Grand Illusion
Made in 1937, The Grand Illusion is one of the greatest films about the futility of war. During World War I, two French officers are captured. Captain De Boeldieu is an aristocrat, while Lieutenant Marechal was a mechanic in civilian life. They befriend another prisoner, Rosenthal, but are separated just before managing to escape. A few months later, they are reunited in a fortress commanded by another aristocrat, Van Rauffenstein. De Boeldieu strikes up a friendship with Van Rauffenstein, but the other two men still want to escape.
