Classical Trio: Beethoven, Haydn, Mozart & Schubert

Recorded earlier this year in the salon at the Mlebourne Recital Centre, the disc traces the beginnigns of the piano trio genre, through four of Seraphim's favourite works: Mozart's C major trio, Haydn's F Sharp minor Trio, Schubert's celestrial Nocturne and Beethoven's glorious trio in E flat, Opus 1 No. 1. Stripped of the sonotrities of romanticism, the piano trio genre is revealed in its purest form as conversation, arguments, rhetoric.

'Beethoven's op. 1 no. 1 was the first work we studied as a trio,' says the group's pianist, Anna Goldsworthy. 'And is a piece that continues to teach and replenish us, with its irresistible combination of joy and intelligence.'

The Classical Trio was recorded with the support of Gordon and Judy Cope-Williams, by producer Stephen Snelleman and engineer Alex Stinson.

Seraphim Trio is celebrated for its vitality, rapport, and innovative programming. Founded in 1994, Seraphim Trio comprises Anna Goldsworthy piano, Helen Ayres violin, and Timothy Nankervis cello. The trio won the prize for Leading Piano Trio and the Audience Choice Award in the 2001 Australian National Chamber Music Competition.

Seraphim Trio has performed throughout Australia and internationally, appears regularly for Musica Viva, is frequently broadcast on ABC Classic FM, and is a regular guest at Australian music festivals. The trio recently recorded the Trout Quintet for ABC Classics and maintains a robust commissioning program working with a range of Australian composers.
