Review
[[band-of-horses-rev]]Band of Horses moved from Seattle to the Midwest in order to record 2007’s Cease to Begin, and the sextet’s song craft has come to reflect this geographical and social shift, with a more subdued, countrified lilt taking hold in their fourth LP, Mirage Rock.
The album is produced by industry veteran Glyn Johns (Bob Dylan, The Who), who has helped to rein in some of the group’s more experimental tendencies while still capturing the two sides of their musical personality – the three-guitar rampaging rockers and the moody, atmospheric, piano-driven ballads. ‘Knock Knock’ kicks off the album and it’s a cracking rock tune that along with ‘Feud’, stands out amongst the more maudlin tracks like ‘Slow Cruel Hands of Time’.
All in all, Mirage Rock is a solid collection of power chords, chiming riffs and thumping rhythms that is sure to please fans and newcomers alike.
