Polarising fans around the Readings music department, Garden Ruin sees Tucson based Calexico invest in some verses and choruses and leave a little of the South West behind. Gone are the mariachi trumpets and vast Sonoran Desert backdrop of much of their previous work. Calexico, currently on tour in Europe, made a lot of friends in Melbourne in 2004 with a surprisingly slick, crowdpleasing stage show. Its not hard to imagine the up-tempo numbers on this album hitting the mark with festival audiences the world over. Maybe theyve appropriated the enigmatic, genre morphing skills of Wilco, who managed to shed their alt.country past for bigger, weirder pastures. Theres the odd Strokes strum and a few acute Interpol angles but on the other hand, theyve brought along a banjo and the vocals emerge in English, French and Spanish. Its a rewarding album and by about the sixth listen Im starting to hear the desert in the mix all over again.
