Judi Mitchell reviews Missa Mexicana
Missa Mexicana is an evocative musical exploration through the elements and influences contributing to the Hispanic Baroque period.
Set around Padillas mass Ego Flos Campi the scene is constantly changing. We travel from the serenity, sophistication and formality of a religious calling to the joy, vibrancy and colour of popular dance rhythms and song. A rich array of accompanying instruments are used. These include the harp, guitars, bass viol and organ portraying the high style and traditional instruments such as large African drums, rain stick, psaltery and even a conch shell for the dance music.
This exciting programme is brilliantly performed by the Harp Consort led by Andrew Lawrence King.
