Co-produced by Wilco and Jim O’Rourke A Ghost is Born is
a natural progression in the Wilco catalogue. From the opening
track, we get an album that is full of beautiful songs such as
“Wishful Thinking” and “Hummingbird”, sandwiched between raw rock
and roll (“I’m a Wheel”) and songs that are classic Wilco
(“Theologians”). Two of the most interesting tracks on the album
which deserve a special mention are “Spiders(Kidsmoke)”, a ten
minute plus workout driven by the hypnotic bass of John Stirrat,
and “Less Than You Think” which starts with gentle voice and piano
and eventually drifts into approximately eleven minutes of
electronic soundscape. While different from Tweedy’s normal style,
these songs don’t detract from the song writing, which is of the
highest calibre. You expect nothing less from Jeff Tweedy. This may
not grab on first listening but it will get you in eventually. A
great album.
