For many years, Ernest Ansermet was one of Decca’s staple conductors in repertoire that, while it focused on music by French and Russian composers, also explored the masterpieces of the Austro-German school. Following requests from around the world, Australian Eloquence embarks on a survey of the bulk of these recordings, many of which have never before been internationally released on CD. Clearly, it’s time for a reassessment of this remarkable force who, with his personal contact with Ravel, Debussy, Stravinsky and Honegger, among others, bridged the gap between two generations.
