MarianneJewelry21-200x299 Queensland writer Marianne de Pierres is the author of the Young Adult speculative fiction/urban fantasy novels Burn Bright and the brand new sequel - Angel Arias. (She also writes the Tara Sharp crime novels under the pseudonym Marianne Delacourt).

Our resident children's and YA book expert Holly Harper - who describes Marianne's latest books as creating one of the most original paranormal worlds ever encountered - threw a few questions her way.

Can you tell us a little bit about your latest book?

The Angel Arias story takes us firstly to Ruzalia’s island where there is much discontent, and then back to Grave. On Grave, Naif must truly confront her demons and evade the wardens. More friends are made on her journey and we come to much better understand Markes’s character. Back on Ixion, Lenoir is plagued by his own warring desires and caught between what he must do and what he wants to do. The landscape is changing and it’s unsure who will prevail.

What has been your favourite experience as a writer?

I’ve had so many it’s really hard to pick one. Messages from readers who’ve been moved/changed by my stories are right at the top of the list. But also being part of the Supanova Pop Expo has been really significant. I’ve loved being able to celebrate pop culture with other fans and have met so many new and talented people who have inspired me to keep writing.

Why do you write for YA/Kids?

The story of Burn Bright has been with me a long time. I didn’t really decide I was going to write YA, the story kind of took me there. However my first ever published stories were for primary school and I wrote them simply because they were such a pleasure – so much fun. I think I have a very “young” sense of humour.

Describe your main character in three words.

Strong, shy, intelligent.

What has been your favourite book of the past month? The past year? Of All time?

This Month: In the Woods by Tana French
This Year: Faithful Place by Tana French
Of All Time: Aaaagh, that’s too hard to pick! Here are a few; Charlotte’s Web, The Secret Garden, Rama Revealed, Neuromancer.

What’s your favourite place to read?

In bed without a doubt. Everything goes away when I’m snuggled with a book. I LOVE bed.

What kind of reader do you think will love your book the most?

Readers who are open to a new experience. Readers who are willing to let the story unfold and don’t want to know every detail in the first paragraphs. Readers who want to go to another place. Readers who dare…
