Last week’s bestselling books includes three wonderful novels from Australians. Charlotte Wood won this year’s Stella Prize for her darkly imaginative The Natural Way of Things, Our Tiny, Useless Hearts is a new romantic comedy from Melbourne author Toni Jordan, and Dominic Smith uses the art world as inspiration for his novel, The Last Painting of Sara De Vos.

Non-fiction readers also tended towards Australian authors with a collection of essays from Helen Garner, a biography of a champion boxer from Arnold Zable, and a powerful meditation on race, culture and national identity from Stan Grant all proving popular.

Other bestselling books include Alain de Botton’s long-awaited new novel, The Course of Love; Jennifer Ackerman’s persuasive exploration of birds as deeply intelligent, The Genius of Birds; and Curtis Sittenfeld’s modern adaptation of Jane Austen, Eligible. Our reviewer described the latter as, ‘one of the funniest and smartest adaptations I’ve ever read’. Read her full review here.
