Our featured writer for April: Joel Meares

Every month, we do a spotlight feature on one Australian author on our blog. We’re thrilled to announce that Joel Meares is our chosen author for April.

In We’re All Going to Die (Especially Me), Meares reflects on the muddle of Gen Y existence with razor-sharp insight and riotous good humour. His personal essays are self-deprecating, confessional and rollicking good fun, and perfect for lovers of David Sedaris and Benjamin Law.

In light of the book, we asked Meares whether he found it hard to be honest when telling embarrassing stories. He opened his response with, ‘One of the first people who read my book was Annabel Crabb, and her response scared the shit out of me. ’

We also invited Joel to share the last five books he’s read. He told us about a technique he has for picking books: ‘Sometimes, rather randomly, I walk into the classics section, close my eyes and point: whatever my finger lands on is the next thing I read. I didn’t grow up in a literary household, and somehow skipped most of ‘the canon’ while studying English at uni, and I find this as efficient a way as any other to play some serious catch-up.’
