The winners of the most prestigious American book awards in children's literature have been announced in the US - and a couple of Australian authors have made the honours lists.

dead-end-in-norvelt The Newbery Medal (which recognises the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children) has been won by Jack Gantos for his novel Dead End in Norvelt.

Inside Out & Back Again by Thanhha Lai and Breaking Stalin’s Nose by Eugene Yelchin were both named as Newbery honour books.

The Randolph Caldecott Medal (awarded for the most distinguished American picture book for children) was won by Chris Raschka for A Ball for Daisy .

Me...Jane by Patrick McDonnell, Grandpa Green by Lane Smith and Blackout by John Rocco were named as Caldecott honour books.

The Michael L. Printz Award (which recognises literary excellence in young adult literature) was won by John Corey Whaley for his novel Where Things Come Back.

The Printz honour books include Daniel 'Lemony Snickett' Handler's new book Why We Broke Up (out next month), Maggie Stiefvater's The Scorpio Races and two books by Australian authors - Jasper Jones by Craig Silvey and The Returning by Christine Hinwood (originally published by Allen & Unwin as Bloodflower). Congratulations to both Craig and Christine.
