well-documented sounds of Highlife and Afrobeat coming out of
Nigeria in the 1970s - young bands caught up in the wave of
psychedelic & prog rock that was sweeping Europe and the States
at the time. Spurred on by Cream drummer Ginger Baker's visits to
Lagos and his band Airforce (featuring many Nigerian musicians),
the sound of fuzzed out Rock reverberated around the Universities
and nightspots of Lagos and Ibadan. The craze that followed hit the
youth & student population of Nigeria hard - mixing fuzz-guitar
& heavy African rhythms with elements of Led Zeppelin, Santana,
Traffic & the Chambers Brothers. 15 of the best cuts from the
scene are available here for the first time in 30 years. Includes
rare tracks from Mono Mono, Ofege, The Elcados and The Hygrades. CD
comes in a deluxe Digipak and includes a 20 page booklet with
extensive liners, rare photos and cover art.

album from Anna Calvi, on 17th January 2011.

Co-produced by Rob Ellis and recorded in London and France, Anna
Calvi’s debut is an astonishingly confident record; the unique
strengths of her songwriting, singing and guitar playing all
jumping out of the speaker together.

country-based songs and marks a deliberate turn towards simplicity
after the band's wildly ambitious and widely acclaimed 2009
song-cycle The Hazards of Love. Produced once again by Tucker
Martine, The King Is Dead features special guest appearances by
Americana luminary Gillian Welch on seven tracks and legendary
R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck on three tracks. The King Is Dead
showcases the ways in which The Decemberists sound just as glorious
in simple, stripped-down compositions as they do on the elaborate
structures that have defined their work for years. The album was
recorded in a converted barn at Pendarvis Farm, an 80-acre estate
of lush meadows, forest, and Mt. Hood views outside of Portland,
and it was the concept of the barn as recording space and as
attitudethat informed the making of The King Is Dead.

first album in thirteen years. Produced by XL Recordings head
Richard Russell during various studio sessions in New York, the
album was enthusiastically received by fans and critics alike.
Meanwhile, the last eighteen months have been meteoric for Jamie

huge acclaim, picking up 2010's prestigious Mercury Music Prize,

Florence & The Machine's 'You've Got The Love') and solo

The result is Gil Scott-Heron And Jamie xx's 'We're New Here' which
sees Jamie xx remixing thirteen tracks from the original 'I'm New

growing up... that early-to-mid-'70s FM, radio-friendly music.
There are a lot of live horns and synths too." Sam Beam

Iron & Wine delivers the new album Kiss Each Other Clean on
21 January 2011. It's been more than a three year wait since Iron
& Wine released the previous album The Shepherd's Dog. Kiss
Each Other Clean was recorded in Chicago with long-time producer
Brian Deck at the helm. A number of familiar names pop up to
contribute musically, adding layer upon layer, rhythm upon rhythm
with acoustic guitars and whispering vocals added for good measure.
In a recent interview Sam said that the resulting ten tracks make
for a "more focused pop record," albeit with "straight-up jazz,
blues and African elements" experimentally thrown in.

"Beam has redefined the artsy folk rock resonance Iron &
Wine is known for, implementing hints of electronic dreaminess It's
reminiscent of the singer/songwriter's earlier awe-inspiring,
Southern sounding repertoire." Prettymuchamazing

"See's him leave his folk roots behind for a more radiofriendly,
1970s pop sound. Beam has also experimented with other genres on
the record as well as classic AOR." Rough Trade Shop

enigmatic, prolific Justin Townes Earle and his third album in
under three years .... Woody Guthrie once said, "Any fool can make
something complicated. It takes a genius to make it simple."

On Harlem River Blues, Justin has chosen the simple route. The
record's not a wall of sound produced to the rafters. It's rockim'
and reelin' at times, sweet and slow at others-and it's great. Like
good fried chicken, a well-cut suit and a handmade guitar, there's
heaven to be found in the beautifully crafted simpler things.
Harlem River Blues straddles not only the Mason-Dixon line, but
time itself. As versed in Mance Lipscomb as he is in M. Ward and
sporting Marc Jacobs suspenders, Justin Townes Earle is a man
beyond eras. With Harlem River Blues, a record that's perfect for
summer nights on either the front porch or the fire escape,
Justin's found yet another way to be a timeless original.

follow up to the critically acclaimed smash "The Crying Light"
which topped year-end best of lists across the globe in 2009.
Antony burst into the international spotlight with his second
album, "I am a Bird Now", which won the UK's prestigious Mercury
Music Prize. Antony & the Johnsons have toured Australia on
three occasions, the last being earlier this year for two sold out
opera house shows and two sold out perth festival shows. While "I
Am a Bird Now" was arresting in its simplicity and vision and "The
Crying Light" is a masterpiece of austerity, "Swanlights" may be
Antony's most wide-ranging emotional work to date. It is a record
that is at moments excruciating and tender, and at other times has
a wicked gleam to its teeth. Musically it's the most maximal of his
work to date. Whereas on "The Crying Light", Antony paired
everything back to its most distilled and essential, on
"Swanlights" the vines have become overgrown and the sound palette
has become more exotic, strange percussive elements, John
Cale-esque string drones, heavily distorted guitars and symphonic
voicings thread the song cycle together.

WITH NEVER-BEFORE-HEARD TRACKSAlbum Launch to Coincide With New
Documentary Stones In ExileUniversal Music Group is pleased to
announce the re-release of The Rolling Stones album Exile on Main
Street with an additional 10 never-before-heard tracks. Regarded as
one of the greatest albums in rock n roll history and one of the
most defining of the Stones catalogue, Exile will be available May
17, 2010, in the U.K. and May 18, 2010, in the US. Upon its release
more than three decades ago, Exile on Main Street innovatively wove
varying musical genres, instruments and even artists into a
compelling rhythmic masterpiece. This new compilation features 10
tracks originally recorded during the Exile era and only recently
discovered while working on the reissue project. The unearthed
tracks which include such titles as Plundered My Soul, Dancing in
the Light, Following the River and Pass The Wine have undergone a
unique evolution, while staying true to the essence of the 1972
album. Alternate versions of Soul Survivor and Loving Cup also are
a part of the Exile bonus materials. As a complement to the release
of Exile on Main Street, a documentary, Stones in Exile, has just
been completed for fans to view on US Network television and
through BBC Worldwide internationally. The documentary features
rare, never-before-seen archival film, photos and interviews as
well as new conversations with the band and the artists they
influence. Produced by Oscar -winning filmmaker John Battsek and
directed by Stephen Kijak, who is known for award-winning work on
Cinemania, and Scott Walker: 30 Century Man, Stones in Exile offers
an uncommon glimpse into the lives of the band as they created one
of the greatest albums of all time. The original 18-track
double-album was recorded in various stages at multiple locations,
including Olympic Studios in London, Keith Richards mansion
Nellcote in France, and in Los Angeles where the literal Main
Street influenced the album title. These atypical circumstances
surrounding the recording process greatly affected the albums
outcome which was highly reflective and influenced by the
sociopolitical turbulence that marked the late
60s and
early
70s. The Stones nixed the influences of a flower-child
era and directed their creative process with the edgier, excessive,
more is more approach of the `70s. Exile reveals a sprawling mix of
genres with undertones of blues, country, R&B and gospel mixed
with lyrics that fervently demand for release and liberation. The
album pulled together an electric array of talent including Dr.
John, the late Billy Preston and pianist Nicky Hopkins. Guitarist
Mick Taylor, who replaced Brian Jones in the band shortly before
Jones died in 1969, is a magnificent blues player who brought an
intensity and elegance to these epic tracks. At times, these
musicians and others lived on the recording studio premises with
the band creating an extremely open and creative collaboration for
the album.

Wolf on June 14th. His first for four years, it's a dazzling
statement of intent and rejuvenation from a
singer/songwriter/musician who hasn't always received the acclaim
his gifts deserve. Now a proud father and a much-in-demand
writer/producer, he's delivered a set of songs about birth, love,
light and darkness which glistens with genius. The album was
recorded at Bear Creek Studio, just north of Seattle, with
co-producer Ryan Hadlock (Blonde Redhead, The Gossip) and mastered
by Gavin Lurssen (O Brother, Where Art Thou?) "If my last album was
weighed-down, this one is a buoy," remarks Ed. "It floats. It's
about that gleaming quality the vitality, the passion that drives
you to keep going and not give up. It poured out of me. I've always
been ready, but now it's like nothing I've ever felt."From the
opening euphoria of "Lustre" to the lupine howl of "Heart Of A
Wolf", from the sunny yet subversive Beach Boys pop of "Do As I Say
Not As I Do" to the beautiful truths of "Fears Of A Father", this
feels like the finest Ed Harcourt album yet. Between 2001 and 2006
he released Here Be Monsters (Mercury-nominated), From Every
Sphere, Strangers and The Beautiful Lie. Having now parted ways
with Heavenly/EMI, worked with many of the biggest and best names
in music (from Patti Smith to Mark Linkous, from Paloma Faith to
Tom Jones), and started his own studio (Werewolf) and his own label
(Piano Wolf), he's "in a good place, confident and in control." The
first single from the album will be 'Do As I Say, Not As I Do'.

multi-instrumentalist Mark Oliver Everett (aka E). End Times
follows on the heels of EELS' critically acclaimed 2009 release
Hombre Lobo, hailed by Vanity Fair as "anti-anthems that get your
dopamine pumping instead of your fist" and praised by Rolling Stone
for its "muddy roadhouse rockers." Largely self-recorded on an old
four track tape machine in the basement of Everettt's Los Angeles
home, the "end times" he writes about isn't "Mayan calendar
conspiracy theory bullshit," says Everett, but, "the state of the
desperate times we live in. The bottom line-ness of it all". While
Hombre Lobo was written from the point of view of a fictional
character (namely, the Dog Faced Boy of EELS' 2001 album
Souljacker), End Times is purely real life as Everett sees it: a
"divorce album" with a modern twist.

control of their sound without losing the spirit of what made the
first record so special. There has been a subtle shift of gear,
represented by a growing confidence in their abilities as artists
and the music follows suit as it flows easily through sparse and
rich textured arrangements without losing any of its etherealness
and charm.

exciting act for both their explosive live shows and their prolific
output of gritty studio recordings. Their breakout release, 100
Days, 100 Nights, sold over 150,000 copies worldwide. This April
the band will release I Learned the Hard Way, their fourth
full-length on Brooklyn’s independent Daptone Records. The record
marks a bold step forward for a band who almost single handedly
stewarded today’s return of soul music to its more traditional
sound.

Produced by Bosco Mann and recorded on an Ampex eight-track tape
machine by Gabriel Roth in Daptone Records’ House of Soul studios,
the record drips with a warmth and spontaneity rarely found since
the golden days of Muscle Shoals and Stax. Sharon’s raw power,
rhythmic swagger, moaning soulfulness, and melodic command set her
firmly alongside Tina Turner, James Brown, Mavis Staples, and
Aretha as a fixture in the canon of soul music. From the lush
Philly-Soul fanfare that ushers in “The Game Gets Old” at the top
of the record, to the stripped down Sam Cooke-style “Mama Don’t
Like My Man” at the tail, the Dap-Kings dance seamlessly through
both the most crafted and simple arrangements with subtlety and
discipline. I Learned the Hard Way is the “Daptone Sound” at its
best.

songs that find THE NATIONAL at the height of their collaborative
career. The music is wide-ranging in its moods, by turns intimate
and rough, expansive and spare, full of stark angles and
atmosphere. Berninger's singing... wild, half-broken, sly... evokes
a feeling of being haunted; by love, by paranoia, by something just
out of reach.

The new album features guest appearances from Justin Vernon (BON
IVER), SUFJAN STEVENS and Richard Reed Parry (ARCADE FIRE), amongst
others. High Violet reveals deeper musical hues and lyrical riches
upon every listen, and is without a doubt The National's most
infectious and immediate album yet.

The National's previous albums (Boxer and Alligator) have made
countless Album Of The Decade lists, and the band's involvement in
curating the Dark Was The Night compilation last year added to
their exploding profile. Even Obama used their song Fake Empire in
his election campaign.

Birgisson, known to the world as Jónsi, the lead singer of Sigur
Rós. The choice to make an album of solo recordings came together
as a solution to a backlog of songs Jónsi had written that didn't
seem to fit within the Sigur Rós context. The first collection of
this material saw its release earlier this year in the form of a
record called 'Riceboy Sleeps'. While that was a contemplative
instrumental album, 'Go' is an entirely different beast. It is
Sigur Ros at it's most jubilant and the majority of lyrics are in
English Jonsi collaborated with the talented young composer Nico
Muhly (Grizzly Bear, Bjork, Antony & The Johnsons) and is
embarking on a world tour in support of the album.

woodland lanes, "The Shadow Of An Empire" is the sound of towns and
dimly lit streets; heartfelt and with a ragged edge. Regan has
ploughed himself a new furrow.

It's been an interesting couple of years for Fionn Regan. Never
one to take the easy route, Fionn could easily have made a safe and
predictable follow-up to The End Of History, his 2007
mercury-nominated and critically lauded debut. He could have simply
recorded another collection of beguiling acoustic beauties, he
could have made the end of history part two, but that would have
been too easy.

Instead, Fionn has returned with a very different second album
bursting with ideas and a set of dazzling new tunes which are sure
to reaffirm his reputation as both maverick genius and one of the
most talented contemporary singer-songwriters around.

'Alas, I Cannot Swim', a mature-sounding folk album that was
released when she was just barely 18 years old. It featured the
lovely track and Triple J favourite, 'Ghosts'. 'I Speak Because I
Can' is Laura Marling's coming of age album, its 10 songs imbued
with a new richness, ripeness and sophistication.

Marling chose to work with producer Ethan Johns (Ray La
Montagne, Kings of Leon, Emmylou Harris). But these songs are no
pale Americana interpretation; rather they are tales deeply rooted
in England. The creative partnership proved fruitful - Laura
Marling will be releasing a second album of new material later in
the year. Laura recently completed a sold-out East Coast tour that
included stunning shows at the Spiegeltent as part of the Sydney
Festival. Plans to return to Australia in support of both albums
looks promising.

make their long-awaited return their extraordinary third album."The
Courage Of Others". It's ironic that Midlake's new album is titled
"The Courage Of Others" because, if anything, the courage is all
theirs. Namely, the courage to do what feels right and stay true to
the spirit of artistic independence whilst ignoring any pressure to
conform to expectations. The result is the Texas quintet's third
album, their most complete and beautiful body of work yet, best
appreciated as a whole in the old-fashioned sense of an album -
which makes perfect sense when you know Midlake linchpin Tim
Smith's fondness for the look and feel of past times. So what's
changed since The Trials of Van Occupanther, their second, hugely
loved breakthrough album? Just as that record was in part inspired
by the soft(er) rock of the early-to-mid 1970s - from Neil Young
and America to Fleetwood Mac - so Midlake's new album also looks to
a slightly earlier, and definitely British, trad-tainted folk
sound. It may share the same gorgeously analogue-warm
electro-acoustic template as Van Occupanther but it's a slower,
darker and more carved record, both eerier and dreamier. Perfect,
in other words, for its February release date, at the height of
winter. Neither do the new songs feature any hermit-scientists like
Van Occupanther, or the mythical Roscoe. The songs that constitute
The Courage Of Others, Tim says, are closer to his heart than those
of their first two albums because, "I don't feel I'm looking at the
songs through someone else's eyes. I've tried to keep it as true to
myself as I could." Guitarist Eric Pulido adds, "We didn't want to
make the same album as Van Occupanther, so we carried on moving and
creating and pushing for a newer sound and emotion."
