Invention Of Hugo Cabret

This intriguing story of Hugo Cabret – an orphan and timekeeper
secretly living within the walls of a busy Paris train station – is
a mystery in many ways. Children will love the book’s unusual story
with its dramatic illustrations, yet the novel’s form – a
combination of story, wordless picture book and silent movie –
defies description. You must both see it and read it. It’s a very
strange and wonderful book of a strange yet wonderful story. Highly
recommended for boys and girls ages 9+.

Athina Clarke is from Readings St Kilda.

favourite with children and adults alike. Its imaginative
illustration and clever cut-out detail charts the progress of a
very hungry caterpillar as he eats his way through the week.

Pip: The Story Of Olive

What happened to Olive wasn't because she'd only ever felt
half. It didn't even happen because her house was full of
crap-knacks and clutter, because she called her mother Mog, or
because she knew of a man named WilliamPetersMustardSeed. It wasn't
because she had a peculiar relationship with the number two, or
because her skin was the exact colour of chicken loaf. Although
there was never any doubt that it was a shake-it-all-about
hokey-pokey of all these things, what happened to Olive couldn't
have happened without Mathilda Graham.

Olive Garnaut likes things in pairs. But even with her own
perfectly symmetrical family, birthday and bedroom, Olive has only
ever felt half. How extraordinary, then, that one day Pip should
appear...

A Rose For The Anzac Boys

It is 1915. War is being fought on a horrific scale in the
trenches of France, but it might as well be a world away from
sixteen–year–old New Zealander Midge Macpherson, at school in
England learning to be a young lady. But the war is coming closer:
Midge's brothers are in the army, and her twin, Tim, is listed as
'missing' in the devastating defeat of the Anzac forces at
Gallipoli .

Desperate to do their bit – and avoid the boredom of school and
the restrictions of Society – Midge and her friends Ethel and Anne
start a canteen in France, caring for the endless flow of wounded
soldiers returning from the front. Midge, recruited by the
over–stretched ambulance service, is thrust into carnage and scenes
of courage she could never have imagined. And when the war is over,
all three girls – and their Anzac boys as well – discover that even
going 'home' can be both strange and wonderful.

What would you do if a very large ceratosaurus stomped into your
